About
Welcome to La Atoleria por Tierra del Sol, a hidden gem located in the heart of Oaxaca de Juarez. Nestled on Reforma 411, RUTA INDEPENDENCIA, this cozy establishment is a tribute to the rich heritage of maize-based beverages, offering a unique glimpse into the cultural tapestry of Mexican cuisine. With a welcoming atmosphere and impeccable service, La Atoleria invites you to explore the delightful world of atole and champurrado.
The moment you step inside, the enchanting decor and warm ambiance transport you to a place where tradition meets modernity. Patrons rave about the exceptionally friendly staff, who go above and beyond to make your experience memorable. Whether you are a seasoned atole enthusiast or trying it for the first time, like many satisfied customers before you, you'll find an array of options that cater to every palate.
One standout recommendation is the champurrado, a delectable chocolate-infused atole that warms the soul. As one reviewer, Steph Couvrette, noted, it's served piping hot, with an inviting texture that dances on the taste buds thanks to four luscious cocoas. For those seeking something lighter yet equally satisfying, the three maize blend with only a hint of sugar proves to be irresistible, as Grace Singleton found—so much so that she returned for a second serving!
La Atoleria is also a delight for groups, accommodating large parties while ensuring each guest feels welcomed. Emily Giang's experience exemplifies this, highlighting the attentive and patient service, especially when navigating the menu in both Spanish and English. The hibiscus drink here is a particular fan favorite, refreshing even after a hot day filled with exploration.
And let's not forget about the charming adjacent bakery, where gluten-free pastries await to complement your drink of choice. From croissants with almonds to intricate corn-based treats, there's something for everyone to enjoy, amplifying the cultural experience. As T-Lam mentioned, La Atoleria is a must-visit for anyone wanting to taste authentic maize drinks of Oaxaca while immersing themselves in true local heritage.
In essence, La Atoleria por Tierra del Sol captures the heart of Oaxacan cuisine, delivering unforgettable flavors in a warm setting. A visit here is not just about tasting traditional beverages; it's about enjoying a slice of life that is steeped in community and culture. Don’t miss out on this culinary treasure, where every sip and bite tells a story!
“ First time trying atole and the champurrado was tasty. It was served very hot and the 4 cocoas just added a nice texture and extra taste. Beautiful space. ”
“ I really enjoyed this for breakfast. The 3 maize blend with a little sugar was recommended and I got it twice because I enjoyed it so much. The pastries next door are also a great find. Delicious! ”
“ This place was absolutely amazing!! We walked in with a big group and they accommodated us with some extra seating. The service was the absolute best--the guy that welcomed us kindly asked if we'd prefer English. When we told him we wanted to practice our Spanish, he talked us to in Spanish but then switched to English when he wanted to make sure we understood. He was very patient with us when we were asking him certain questions about the drinks we were considering. The drinks we ordered included chocolate-atole, some hot chocolate drinks, and a hibiscus drink. We also got a croissant with almonds I think. I LOVED the hibiscus drink, it was really refreshing after a hot day, and they put in a little bit more sweetener per my request. The vibe of the place is really cozy, simplistic, and neat. There's a lot of ingredients they have out on display, and it just felt like a perfect place to hang out and have a sweet drink. ”
“ I can’t speak to the atole here, but I loved the atmosphere, decore, and espresso! They also had several corn-based, gluten-free pastries. I enjoyed the almond bun ”
“ This place is a must to taste the authentic maize drinks of Oaxaca. Great service with an explanation as we did the 4 sample tasting. Adjacent bakery is very good as well so you can order & bring over to enjoy with the maize drinks of your choice or coffee. Great vibe, very authentic & true to the local heritage. ”
“ This is a perfect place to drink atole. I noticed that it might also be a place to do some work in the evening and still enjoying atole and sweet bread. Atole is usually drunken in the morning or evening, but this place gives that vive of getting to grab atole any time regardless of the heat because they also offer cold atole. My favorite flavors were coconut, maiz azul, amaranth, mango, yes! I went several days in a row . ”
“ You have to come and try the atole. I am mexican and have tried atole before and this is reaaaaally good. My german boyfriend had never tried it before and he loved it. Our favourite was the tortilla one. My dad drank atole as a kid everyday and even he loved this one ”
“ Great place to try Atole, a pre Hispanic drink made of corn - plus some baked goods from their bakery next door. We had two Atoles, one with 3 types of corn and another with 4 types of cocoa - and enjoyed both (plus a freshly made savory pastry!). The personnel was also incredibly friendly - they let us try some Atoles before deciding which one(s) to order and recommended us which pastries to order. Plus they showed us around the place, which is really pretty and tasteful. ”
